Notifications keep stopping

For the last few days my notifications keep stopping. If I go for a complete reset they start again but then I get the "enable the message" kind of messages and messsages from stuff I don't want and when I start modifiying things the notifications stop again. Driving me up the wall, not clue exactly which is my trouble....my problem is that I get a lot of whatsapp messages (.....boy I wish there was 1 group I could ignore, it's set to not notify in whatsapp) but everything else is intermittent so difficult to test.
